St. John Lutheran Church in Bird City received $6,310 in 2019 and $10,933 in 2020 from the Hansen Community Grant Fund for Cheyenne County to help renovate several Sunday School rooms at the church to become apartment rooms for short-term stays in Bird City.
It is quite challenging for out of town visitors to find lodging in Cheyenne County. Prior to this project, there was no lodging option available in Bird City.
After the first grant in 2019, one apartment is now available for use in the educational wing of St. John. It is being used frequently by people coming into town for the alumni reunion, Fourth of July celebration, Thresher Show, Cheyenne County fair, weddings, funerals, Christmas,Thanksgiving, Easter, family reunions, etc. Many bookings are from repeat guests.
There are times when two different parties need lodging and the addition of renovating the old Sunday school room into lodging, with two queen beds, is now in progress with the 2020 grant.
The apartment is fulfilling a great need in our community.
